Goa is also known as the Pearl of the Orient. It occupies a prominent place on the tourist map of the world. According to the 1991 census this tiny state of 3,702 sq. km. has a population of 1,169,793.
Major attractions include long stretches of Calangute, Colva and Vagator beaches; Dudhsagar and Arvallem waterfalls, and Mahavir and Bondla Wildlife sanctuaries.
The Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral Churches at Old Goa are famous for their intricately carved wooden altars made by Goan craftsmen. Ponda Taluka has 7 temples within a radius of 5 km.
