10th International Working Meeting on Soil Micromorphology Moscow, Russia, July 8-13, 1996

The 1996 IWMSM will be held in Moscow State University (MSU).  The university campus is 10 km from the city Centre, on Vorobiovy Gory. 
Meetings are planned in the Main Building of MSU with registration and sectional sessions in the separate building of the Faculty of Soil
Science.  Accommodation is available in hotels and in the MSU hostel.  Accommodation plus meals will cost approximately USD 40-50 per
day.  Registration fees have not yet been fixed, but will be about USD 200-250.

1.  Soil genesis and micromorphology.
     *Zonal soils of the East-European plain
     *Permafrost affected soils
     *Podzolic soils (soils with textural profile)
     *Chernozems
     *Salt affected soils
     *Aridic soils
     *Tropical humid soils

2.  Diagnostics of soil forming processes.
     *Weathering of primary minerals and rocks
     *Organic matter transformations in soils
     *Neoformations:  sesquioxides, salts, carbonates, etc.
     *Soil biology

3.  Methods and terminology
     *New approaches in submicroscopy
     *Image analysis in soil micromorphology
     *Data base and computerization in micromorphology
     *Terminology:  State-of-the-Art

4.  Applications
     *Early diagnostics of man-induced changes in soils
     *Micromorphology in agricultural research
     *Application in archaeology and paleopedology
     *Teaching:  problems and advances

Papers on these and other aspects of micromorphology will be accepted for either oral or poster presentation.  Abstracts of papers, included
in the program of IWMSM, will be published before the beginning of the meeting

Field Trips

Three professional field trips are being arranged for participants.

1    PRE-comference tour:  East-European taiga landscapes and soil catenas.  Vicinity of Saint Petersburg (3-4 days).  Soils:  podzols
     (catenary variations); sod-podzolic with surface gley; acid brown forest soils [Ferric, Carbic, Gleyic Podzols; Stagnic Podzoluvisols;
     Dystric Cambisols]

2.   MID-conference tour:  Agricultural landscapes of Central Russia.  Moscow district - research stations of MSU (1 day).  Soils:  virgin
     and cultivated sod-podzolic soils [Podzoluvisols]

3.   POST-conference tour:  Soil zonality in the Russian Plain.  Moscow - Pushchino - Kursk - Kherson (Askania-Nova reserve) (5 days). 
     Soils:  grey forest, leached, typical & southern chernozems, chestnut soils, solods [Greyzems, Luvic, Haplic, Calcic Chernozems,
     Planosols]


Program for Accompanying Persons

Visits to Cultural Ancient Centre - Sergiev Posad (Zagorsk) and trips in Moscow suburbs, including visits to experimental stations (University,
Dokuchaev Institute), sightseeing of Moscow, excursions to the Kremlin, Art Galleries, museums, kindergartens, etc.

Call for Papers

All participants are invited to submit titles to qualify for presentation in oral or poster sessions.  The title of the presentation and Notice of Intent
form should be mailed to the Organizing Committee before April 1, 1995.
