Minutes of Subcommission B at the 15th World Congress of Soil Science

The business meeting of Subcommission B (Soil Micromorphology)
of the International Society of Soil Science was called to order by
Chairperson Colin Chartres at 12:10 p.m. on July 14, 1994 in Hall
3 of the International Acapulco Center.  This meeting was together
with the 15th World Congress of Soil Science, Acapulco, Mexico.

Old business

Chairperson Chartres reported on the last IWMSM in Townsville,
Australia held in July 1992.  Over 120 delegates and spouses
attended.  Election results were as follows:

He reported that the Kubiena Award was presented to Dr. Georges
Stoops.  Chairperson Chartres reported that the proceedings of the
IWMSM in Townsville has been published.  The reference is as
follows:

     Ringrose-Voase, A.J., and G.S. Humphries (ed).  1994. 
     Soil micromorphology: Studies in management and
     genesis.  Developments in Soil Science 22, Elsevier
     Science B.V., The Netherlands.

New business

Professor Sergei A. Shoba reported that the 10th International
Working Meeting on Soil Micromorphology will be in June 1996 in
Moscow, Russia at Moscow State University.  An organizing
committee has been formed with plans to distribute the first
information circular in July 1994.  Accommodation will be offered
in hotels and in the Moscow State University hostel. 
Accommodations plus meals will cost about USD 40-50 per day. 
The registration fee will be about USD200-300.  The first call for
papers will be included in the first information circular.  The deadline
for receipt  of presentation titles and registration form is February 1,
1995.  (Editor's Note:  This deadline was later changed to April 1,
1995.)  Three professional tours are being arranged for participants.

Dr. Klaudia Oleschko discussed plans to develop a training center in
Mexico for soil micromorphology.

Chairperson Chartres reported on proposed changes in the
International Society of Soil Science Council, including formation of
a new commission (Soils and the Environment) and several new
working groups (e.g., Forest Soils and History of Soil Science).  A
proposal is also being developed that includes two ISSS presidents,
with one having the usual duties and the other organizing and
presiding at the World Congress.  Chairperson Chartres announced
that the 16th World Congress of Soil Science will be August 20-26
at Montpellier, France.

Dr. Martin Rabenhorst gave a report from the Soil Micromorphology
Committee of the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA).  A
reference slide set of soil micromorphology has been developed and
is available for purchase from the Headquarters Office of the SSSA
in Madison, Wisconsin, USA.

Dr. Klaudia Ohleschko asked the membership to consider Mexico as
a possible host for the 11th International Working Meeting on Soil
Micromorphology in 2000.  Chairperson Chartres noted that a formal
proposal would be welcome at the 10th IWMSM in Moscow and that
other countries could also submit a proposal.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 12:45 p.m.
