An Advanced Workshop on the Genesis, Fabric, and Properties of
Collapsible Soils was held at Loughborough University in the United
Kingdom between the 11th and 14th April 1994.

The workshop wassponsored by NATO with all travelling and accommodation expenses paid by them. It was attended by 34 delegates from 14 countries and included representatives from the disciplines of micromorphology, geology, sedimentology, and engineering. All delegates presented a paper during the four day period, and this was complemented by a poster session and a demonstration of image processing and analysis software for microfabric analysis.

There were nine sessions with each one including a keynote address. The workshop covered a variety of topics including what is actually meant by the term "collapsible soils", micromorphological and sub- microscopic methods, climatic change and the ageing of collapsible soils, mechanical testing of collapsible soils, and ideas for future research.

The group stressed the need for collaborative meeting with other groups working on microfabric etc. including geologists, sedimentologists, soil scientists, soil micromorphologists, soil chemists, soil physicists, geotechnical engineers, and marine scientists working on sediments.

Written papers from the conference were submitted by 15 July 1994 and publication is due sometime in 1995.
